The INBGC Access Award
The Access Award reduces the certification fee for practitioners serving communities with limited access to grief support. It reduces what a practitioner pays. It never reduces what a practitioner must meet.
The reason
Why the Access Award exists
Grief support is not evenly distributed. Some communities have hospice programs, employer resources, funded counseling, and clinicians within driving distance. Others have almost none of that, and the people doing grief work there are frequently doing it alone, without institutional backing, and often without charging much, because the people they serve cannot pay much.
That produces a problem a credential can either ignore or address. A practitioner with a well-resourced practice may absorb a certification fee without much thought. A practitioner running grief groups in a rural county, or serving a community in its own language, or sitting with families after losses nobody else names, may not be able to.
If certification is only reachable by the first, the standard ends up concentrated exactly where support was already available, and absent exactly where it was not.
The standard should reach the places that need it most, not only the places that can afford it.
This is an award rather than a discount, and the difference is structural. There is an application, published criteria, a fixed number available, and a decision that can go either way. It is also the only mechanism that reduces an individual candidate's certification fee.
The award
What it covers
Awards reduce the certification fee at one of three tiers, matched to the applicant's circumstances rather than ranked by merit. They do not cover the fee entirely, and every recipient pays part of their own certification.
The largest reduction to the $1,295 certification fee.
A mid-range reduction to the certification fee.
The smallest reduction to the certification fee.
The remaining balance may be paid in full or through the INBGC payment plan, billed directly with no third-party financing and no credit application. An award combined with the plan spreads the remaining cost across three payments.
Awards apply to the certification fee only. They do not cover Board Examination retakes, additional Practice Exam attempts, annual credential renewal, or reinstatement.
The award grants access to certification, which is the measurement of a candidate against the published standard. It does not subsidize anything else INBGC charges for, because keeping those functions apart is what the rest of the structure depends on.

Everything every other certificant receives, with no distinction of any kind:
- The BCGC designation
- A credential number
- A digital credential
- A printed certificate
- Independent confirmation of standing on request
- Placement in the Find a Grief Coach matching pool
- Group rates on professional liability coverage through INBGC's insurance partners
Availability
How many are available
Five awards are made once a month, in a single decision on the first, distributed across the three tiers. The number is published and fixed.
Applications received by the fifteenth are reviewed together and decided on the first of the following month. No awards are made at any other time, and the date you apply within a cycle confers no advantage.
The schedule
Applications are open on an ongoing basis. Awards are made once a month, on the first day of the month. To be included in a given month's decision, apply by the fifteenth of the month before. Applications that arrive after the fifteenth are held for the next decision, with no disadvantage.

Eligibility
Who the award is for
Applications are evaluated on mission first and need second. Candidates must meet the full certification standard, serve communities with limited access to grief support, and find the certification fee a genuine barrier. All three must be present.
You must be eligible for certification
The Access Award reduces cost and waives nothing. Applicants must meet the published eligibility requirements in full, including documented grief-specific education across the six topic areas and 50 verified practice hours of non-clinical grief support.
An application from a candidate who is not yet eligible is held rather than declined. Program Administration will identify exactly what is outstanding so it can be closed before a future month.
Your work must serve people with limited access to grief support
This is the primary criterion. Priority goes to practitioners, whatever their title or setting, working with:
- Rural or geographically isolated communities
- Low-income populations without access to paid support
- Specific cultural, faith, or language communities underserved by existing providers
- Populations whose losses are rarely recognized as grief, including estrangement, incarceration, immigration separation, pregnancy and infant loss, and loss connected to identity
- Communities carrying loss at a scale local resources do not meet
Cost must be a genuine barrier
Applicants attest that the certification fee, including the payment plan and employer funding, presents a real obstacle. No financial documentation is required and none will be requested. The attestation is taken in good faith.
Where you completed your education. Whether you hold other credentials. Your title. Audience size, practice size, or revenue. Whether you have applied before.

Who you serve, where, and how those people currently find grief support. Three hundred words or fewer. Write plainly. Nobody is scoring your prose.
One confirmation that cost is a barrier. No documentation, no financial disclosure, no explanation required.
Applications are open at all times. Apply by the fifteenth to be included in the next month's decision, issued on the first.

Governance
How decisions are made
Program Administration reviews and decides every award. The Advisory Board sets the certification standard and does not review individual candidate files, including award applications.

No commercial influence
Where the Access Fund is supported by outside contributions, contributors may fund the pool. They may not select recipients, learn who received an award, review applications, or shape the criteria, and no contribution creates any claim on a decision. Contributors are never drawn from education providers, continuing education providers, or certificants.
Recipients are not identified
Award status is not disclosed to referring professionals or institutions, does not appear in any verification INBGC provides, and is not noted on a certificant's record. Sharing it is entirely the recipient's choice.
Decisions are final for the month
Applicants who are not selected may apply again in any future month with no disadvantage.
The standard
What does not change
An Access Award recipient completes the same process as every other candidate.
- The same eligibility review, with no reduced documentation
- The same education review against the six topic areas
- The same 50 verified practice hours, verified the same way
- The same attestation to the Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice
- The same proctored Board Examination, at the same 80 percent passing standard
- The same annual credential renewal and continuing education requirements
The credential is identical. No notation, no separate designation, no distinction of any kind between a certificant who received an award and one who did not. Anyone confirming a certificant's standing sees an Active BCGC credential, because that is what they hold.
