The reason
Why the Access Award exists
Grief support is not evenly distributed. Some communities have hospice programs, employer resources, funded counseling, and clinicians within driving distance. Others have almost none of that, and the people doing grief work there are frequently doing it alone, without institutional backing, and often without charging much, because the people they serve cannot pay much.
That produces a problem a credential can either ignore or address. The coach with a comfortable private-pay practice in a well-resourced area can absorb a certification fee without much thought. The coach running grief groups in a rural county, or serving a community in its own language, or sitting with families after losses nobody else names, frequently cannot.
If certification is only reachable by the first coach, the standard ends up concentrated exactly where support was already available, and absent exactly where it was not.
The standard should reach the places that need it most, not only the places that can afford it.
This is an award rather than a discount, and the difference is structural. There is an application, published criteria, a fixed number available each quarter, and a decision that can go either way.
The award
What it covers
Awards reduce the certification fee at one of three amounts, matched to the applicant's circumstances rather than ranked by merit. They do not cover it entirely, and every recipient pays part of their own certification.

The remaining balance may be paid in full or placed on an INBGC payment plan, billed directly with no third-party financing and no credit application. An award combined with a plan brings certification within reach for most practices.
Awards apply to the certification fee only. They do not cover Board Examination retakes, additional Practice Exam attempts, or annual renewal. A recipient who wants a specialty endorsement pays that $1,250 separately.
The award grants access to certification, which is the measurement of a coach against the published standard. It does not subsidize anything INBGC sells alongside that measurement, because keeping those two functions apart is what the rest of the structure depends on.

Availability
How many are available
Up to five awards each quarter, distributed across the three amounts. The number is published and fixed.

- Up to two awards of $1,250
- Up to two awards of $750
Awards not granted in a quarter do not carry forward. If no application meets the criteria in a given window, no award is made. Five is a maximum rather than a quota, and the number available is reviewed annually.

Eligibility
Who the award is for
Applications are evaluated on mission first and need second. Coaches must meet the full certification standard, serve communities with limited access to grief support, and find the certification fee a genuine barrier. All three must be present.
You must be eligible for certification
The Access Award reduces cost and waives nothing. Applicants must meet the published eligibility requirements in full, including documented grief-specific education across the six topic areas and 25 verified practice hours.
An application from a candidate who is not yet eligible is held rather than declined. Program Administration will identify exactly what is outstanding so it can be closed before a future window.
Your practice must serve people with limited access to grief support
This is the primary criterion. Priority goes to coaches working with:
- Rural or geographically isolated communities
- Low-income populations without access to paid support
- Specific cultural, faith, or language communities underserved by existing providers
- Populations whose losses are rarely recognized as grief, including estrangement, incarceration, immigration separation, pregnancy and infant loss, and loss connected to identity
- Communities carrying loss at a scale local resources do not meet
Cost must be a genuine barrier
Applicants attest that the certification fee, including available payment plans and employer funding, presents a real obstacle. No financial documentation is required and none will be requested. The attestation is taken in good faith.

How to apply
Four steps. Most applicants finish in under thirty minutes. There is no essay and no financial disclosure.

Who you serve, where, and how those people currently find grief support. Three hundred words or fewer. Write plainly. Nobody is scoring your prose.
One confirmation that cost is a barrier. No documentation, no financial disclosure, no explanation required.

Governance
How decisions are made
Program Administration reviews and decides every award. The Advisory Board sets the certification standard and does not review individual candidate files, including award applications.

No commercial influence
Where the Access Fund is supported by outside contributions, contributors may fund the pool. They may not select recipients, review applications, or shape the criteria, and no contribution creates any claim on a decision.
Recipients are not identified
Award status is not disclosed to referral partners, does not appear in any verification INBGC provides, and is not noted on a certificant's record. Sharing it is entirely the recipient's choice.
Decisions are final for the quarter
Applicants who are not selected may apply again in any future window with no disadvantage.
The standard
What does not change
An Access Award recipient completes the same process as every other candidate.
- The same eligibility review, with no reduced documentation
- The same education review against the six topic areas
- The same 25 verified practice hours, verified the same way
- The same agreement to the Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice
- The same proctored Board Examination, at the same 80 percent passing standard
- The same annual renewal and continuing education requirements
The credential is identical. No notation, no separate designation, no distinction of any kind between a certificant who received an award and one who did not. Anyone confirming a coach's standing sees a Board Certified Grief Coach, because that is what they are.
